Meet Heidi.

Heidi is a sweet and gentle Shepherd/Husky rescue from Northern Ontario. With your consent, she loves to attend sessions to support the well-being of my clients.

Research shows that playing with a dog increases our dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin levels; all of which affect our mood. Dogs are great at engaging individuals, and are motivated by social contact; this makes them the perfect addition to a session. For those who are interested in her attending, Heidi can support me in creating a safe, warm, and non-judgmental space, which enables clients to let their guard down and feel comfortable. Furthermore, for those who are uncomfortable with eye contact, Heidi can offer something else to focus on. And, as an extra bonus, when children and adolescents know that they get to “play” with Heidi, they are much more motivated to attend!

Dogs are incredible at identifying a client’s emotional state, and then providing them what they need in the moment. For example, if feeling sad, Heidi may pop over for a snuggle. (Did you know that the simple act of petting a dog can calm your nervous system!?) Dogs can also assist in teaching about emotional regulation. For example, if Heidi is in "hyper-arousal" (i.e., excitable, moving too fast, not focusing), children can identify this and help her get regulated (i.e., calm, ready to learn); children can then apply this learning to themselves.

There are many benefits to having a dog in your session; however, if you prefer your sessions to include humans only, we completely understand! :)
